Energy from the hot springs
Deep below Valens, Europe’s highest-flow acratotherm* wends its way through the mountain interior. It takes ten years for the spring water to emerge in Tamina Gorge near Bad Pfäfers. At 36.5 degrees, it is almost exactly the same temperature as the human body.
The healing properties of hot springs – especially for chronic and rheumatic diseases – have been known since Roman times. In 1240, monks discovered the restorative power of the Bad Pfäfers hot spring. The sick were placed into baskets and then lowered into the gorge to bathe in the hot pits. In 1535, Paracelsus healed many in the gorge. By 1718, construction of the baroque bath house in Tamina Gorge was finished. And when our centre was opened in 1970, the Medical Department was transferred to Valens.
Bathing supports all rehabilitation
Since then, the thermal water has been piped into our rehabilitation centre. We operate a public and an in-house hot spring pool for therapeutic purposes. Here, ancient healing methods are combined with modern medical principles to form a harmonious whole.
